Since opening her doors in 1996, the gallery has become a prominent establishment in the Chelsea neighborhood. Ms. Morthland is highly regarded as an expert in vintage 20th century photography, having begun her career at the Center of Photography in Woodstock, New York in 1977. She subsequently became the director of the Howard Greenberg Gallery in Soho and served in that post for nine years. During her tenure at the Howard Greenberg Gallery she also founded and was the director of Gallery 292, an intimate space inspired by Alfred Stieglitz's famous 291Gallery. Currently, the Sarah Morthland Gallery represents a handful of contemporary artists with approximately eight exhibitions per calendar year. The gallery also specializes in vintage photographs by various artists and provides consulting services.
